Burnout Paradise Challenges: The Stats

Burnout Paradise—originally known as Burnout 5—is the seventh installment in the now world-renowned Burnout simulated racing video game series.  Developed by Criterion Games and published by Electronic Arts, the Burnout Paradise challenge is available for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Microsoft Windows.

Burnout Paradise is identified by its setting in the fictitious Paradise City as well as its association with the Guns N’ Roses track “Paradise City” (which is the title music to Burnout Paradise and also appears on its soundtrack).  The Paradise City backdrop—new in Burnout Paradise challenges—gives gamers six boroughs and a seemingly unlimited expanse of sprawling streets on which to rev, race, jump, crash, cruise, cause destruction, pull tricks, and finally, freeburn.  For BringIt members, however, there’s some added action: the ability to make money!  When you compete in a two-player Burnout Paradise battle or multiplayer online Burnout Paradise tournament, you can not only send your opponents spiraling out of control, head-on, into five-lane rush-hour traffic, you can get paid in the process.

Online Burnout Paradise Tournaments: Features & Upgrades

According to Alex Ward, who directed the game’s development at Criterion, Burnout Paradise is a "complete reinvention" of previous Burnout racing video games.  Most notably, it is the first Burnout battle to deviate from the series’ trademark assembly of real racetracks, and instead, bring in an open-world fictional backdrop, in the form of Paradise City.  But that’s just the beginning.  Burnout Paradise competitions deviate from their predecessors in a variety of respects:

  • Addition of downloadable content—including the Cagney and Burnout Bikes Packs—allows you to transform Burnout Paradise even further
  • Online Freeburn feature—enables you to drop in and out of online Burnout Paradise play at your leisure; freeburning online means you can explore Paradise, jumping, crashing, and discovering shortcuts whenever you’ve got a few free minutes
  • Open racing—lets you start your engines anywhere, anytime; just pull up to any of 120 specified “intersections” to start a race, Showtime (formerly called Crash Mode), Marked Man event, or Burning Route
  • Upgraded damage system—results in two different categories of post-crash cars: a “driveaway,” which lets you keep on crusin’, and a “wrecked” state, which requires you wait while your car is serviced
  • Street statistics—obtained by keeping records on individual drivers—yield stats for every street in the Burnout Paradise competition, including fastest time and biggest crash
  • Mugshots—mean you can not only disgrace your opponent via takedowns and other treacherous street stunts, you can capture their humiliated headshot for posterity (via any compatible camera)
