FIFA 09 Tournaments: The Stats

FIFA 09 is the most recent version of EA Sport's popular video game challenge that mimics the sport of professional soccer. Known as FIFA Soccer 09 in good ol' North America where we insist on calling football, “soccer,” the FIFA 09 competition is compatible with all leading platforms, including PS2, PS3, and the Wii by Nintendo.

Released in the fall of 2008, FIFA 09 features different versions of cover-art regionally; while Brazilian superstar Ronaldinho is highlighted on all FIFA09 covers, additional cover costars rotate geographically: To name a few, Guillermo Ochoa and Maurice Edu grace the North American FIFA Soccer 09 edition, Wayne Rooney is represented on the UK and Australian FIFA 09 video game tournament covers, and Gonzalo Higuain occupies the Spanish FIFA 09 version. But no matter whose face is staring-or sneering-back at you from the front of the FIFA 09 box, as a free member of BringIt, you can challenge gamers from all parts of the globe and fatten your wallet, risk-free…since BringIt holds all cash in an escrow account until a winner has been declared and confirmed.

Online FIFA 09 Tournaments: Features & Upgrades

According to an interview with David Rutter, EA's line producer on FIFA 09 Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, FIFA 09 battles boast 250 “key additions and improvements” compared to previous incarnations, the vast majority driven by fan input. Of those 250, the following are some of the most major:

  • Increased responsiveness of gamer-controlled functions—means actions like running, tackling, dribbling, heading, passing, and shooting are more accurately affected; movements are swifter and speedier, and how players perform on the pitch is much more a function of your competence with the controller
  • Increased impact of attributes—means gamers in FIFA 09 challenges must be more in tune with players' real-life strengths and weaknesses, as they now function more parallel in the simulated soccer universe; understand stars' specific skills, and you can take advantage of their soft spots to incapacitate your opponents
  • Evolved AI—enables gamers to benefit from an even higher level of strategy, one where, for example, players can change their mind mid-dive should they feel they've made a mistake
  • New goalkeeper technology—allows for smarter positioning, more authentic reaction to saves, and quicker post-save recovery
  • Retooled & personalized collision system—bases collision specifics (speed, weight, and force) on players' real-life physical traits, further facilitating an authentic FIFA 09 football experience
  • Expanded weather and time selection—enables FIFA09 fans to battle under their choice of conditions, by selecting day, dusk, or night-as well as rain or snow-prior to gameplay
  • Enhanced Be a Pro mode—now includes a career mode, where you can control your custom-created player for four seasons, actually affecting his skill building as a result of your progress on the pitch; FIFA 2009 also allows you to utilize Be a Pro in “unlocked” mode, where you can transfer gains made as another player back to your primary pro
  • Custom Team Tactics mode—accomplishes EA's mission of differentiating teams in FIFA 09 by constructing them in accordance with how they play in real life; this is done with the implementation of “sliders” that allow you to fine-tune your team's playing style in “defending” and “attacking” modes (which offer up to 140 options), among others
  • Adidas Live Season feature—similar to Living Rosters in NBA 2K9 and available on Play Station 3 and Xbox360-automatically updates player characteristics on a weekly basis to coincide with real-world fluctuations
  • Ultimate Team—lets fans of the online FIFA 09 challenge customize their own dream teams by buying, selling, or trading their soccer stars with competitors worldwide
