The Halo 3 challenge is a first person shooter video game developed by Bungie and published by Microsoft Game Studios.  Exclusive to the Xbox 360 console, Halo 3 is the third installment in the Halo franchise, finishing off the storyline that was started in Halo: Combat Evolved and resumed in Halo 2.  Grossing an obscene $300 million in its first week on shelves and selling an astounding 8.1 million units as of January 3, 2008, the Halo 3 competition was the top-selling U.S. video game in 2007.  Furthermore, the development team’s attention to multiplayer modes paid off: As of March 2009, over one billion online Halo 3 battles had been played. 

Once again set in the fictional Halo Universe, Halo 3 takes place during the year 2553.  Halo 3 challenges begin with the Covenant (a group of alien races) having located the human’s homeland and waging all-out war on our species.  In Halo 3 competitions, players seek to defend humanity via combat carried out on foot, using various vehicles, and assisted by an ever-expanding arsenal of weaponry.  Experienced through an FPS game perspective, in one-man Halo Three challenges, players take on the role of the Master Chief, a mechanically augmented supersoldier.

Via Xbox LIVE, however, Halo 3 fans can compete, collaboratively, in campaigns and, competitively, in Halo 3 online tournaments.  Trick is—finding adversaries worth annihilating.  To this end, Halo 3 players can use the in-game “Matchmaking” system, which involves a bunch of complex ranking-rigmarole and the effort of putting together a playlist that sounds like a lot of time better spent sniping enemies.
