NHL 09 Challenges: The Stats

NHL 09 is the 18th installment in the NHL ice hockey video game series, published annually by EA’s EA Sports division.  The NHL 09 challenge succeeds the NHL 08 video game, which won an IGN Best of 2008 award for Best Xbox 360 Sports Game.  Available for the PS2, PS3, Xbox 360, and PC platforms, the cover of the NHL 09 competition features Dion Phaneuf, currently of the Calgary Flames.

For members of BringIt, NHL hockey 09 is just one of over 15 online video game sports showdowns in which they can compete to earn cash off their less-capable competitors.  For those used to kicking butt in online hockey competitions, the NHL 09 battle provides some exciting upgrades, allowing gamers to shoot, save, and scramble with a little more skill.

Online NHL 09 Tournaments: Features & Upgrades

While there are new features to be found in the already-outstanding NHL 09 challenge, one weak spot is the fighting engine, which consists, for all practical purposes, of a single punch button, allowing you to deliver one blow (two if you’re really beating the crap out of someone) before the fight is finished.  Luckily, other enhancements more than make up for it:

  • Flexible controls—are made even more advanced in NHL 09 hockey challenges, particularly how the right analog stick so smoothly controls a player’s hockey stick
  • Be a Pro mode—a popular feature from the Madden series—makes its debut in NHL 09, allowing potential pros to start their ascendance at the bottom and use their skill and speed to work their way to the top (can you say “Stanley Cup”?)
  • New features for the advanced athlete—include the lift stick option, the defensive skill stick, and the dump-and-chase, enabling seasoned stick-men to more thoroughly pummel their opponents
  • NHL 94 control compatibility—lets the novice (or nostalgic) NHL 09 player opt to use the old-style controls to get acquainted with the game (or relive the reckless abandon of playing in their parents’ basement)
  • Additional online features—give fans of the online NHL 09 tournament the ability to create custom characters for interactive play, compete in up to six-by-six-player NHL 09 video game battles, and enjoy a more real-life NHL experience via updated rosters
  • Appearance of European leagues—specifically, the German DEL, Czech O2 Extraliga, and Russian Superliga—gives gamers a preview of their NHL teammates of tomorrow, enabling them to share the ice with some of the sport’s most promising young stars
