Street Fighter II Challenges: The Stats

Released in 1991, Street Fighter II is a head-to-head fighting game developed and published by Capcom to succeed their 1987 fighting competition, Street Fighter.  Originally released as an arcade game, Street Fighter II challenges can be played in single-player mode, in which SF II players battle a computer-controlled opponent, or in two-player mode, where gamers compete against real-life opponents in Street Fighter II online tournaments.  Most notably, the Street Fighter II competition is widely considered to have kick-started the fighting video game craze of the 90s.

Available for arcades and numerous home-based consoles, including PlayStation 2 among the more modern, the Street Fighter II battle resembles its predecessor in many respects: Players select a character and compete against a single opponent in best-two-out-of-three, online fighting competitions.  Also similar, a Street Fighter II video game tournament consists of three rounds, during which gamers try to knock out their opponent and/or exhaust his energy before the timer expires.  In an online Street Fighter II challenge where there is a double KO or both fighters have equal amounts of energy remaining, the match is declared a draw; extra rounds are then played until a winner is determined in sudden-death fashion.

BringIt members, however, enjoy an added benefit…the ability to beat the cash out of their competitors.  When you sign up for a free BringIt membership, you can punch, kick, and karate chop opponents from around the world in Street Fighter II competitions for almost any amount of money you’re willing to risk!

Online Street Fighter II Tournaments: Features & Upgrades

Although Street Fighter 2 sticks to a similar format as the first Street Fighter, there are subtle differences in gameplay and much more creativity in characters.  So while the Street Fighter II tournament may not have been a totally novel offering, it made enough of an impact to secure a spot for the fighting genre in the future of online gaming.

Specifically, SF 2 differs from the first Street Fighter in the following respects:

  • Character-based styles—is one of the primary progressions in Street Fighter II game battles, allowing players to not only choose avatars based on appearance, but on each character’s special moves and distinct style of fighting
  • Bonus games—give gamers in single-player mode the opportunity to earn extra points by participating in a bonus challenge after each third round
  • Command-based combat enhancements—upgrade the actual fighting mechanism in Street Fighter II with the inclusion of grabbing and throwing attacks and the ability to perform a combo of basic and advanced moves by “canceling” a motion mid-move
  • Greater choice of characters—initially including an eight-player roster—makes video game SF 2 matches more personal by allowing players to pick from multinational personas, including a highly-motivated Japanese martial artist, a Russian pro-wrestler, a Yogi with an instinct to annihilate, and a female martial artist from China with the goal of getting even with enemies who abducted her father
