Street Fighter IV Challenges: The Stats

Capcom’s first numbered Street Fighter game since 1999, the Street Fighter IV challenge is available for home-based, next-gen consoles, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.  Released in February 2009 in Japan and North America, Street Fighter 4 enables gamers with a broadband Internet connection to battle it out in online Street Fighter IV competitions with remote opponents, in arguably the world’s coolest fighting game of all time.

Originally released in an arcade version, gameplay in Street Fighter IV is similar to Street Fighter II, and even more closely related to the subsequent Street Fighter II Turbo, which was used as the primary progenitor for the Street Fighter IV battle.  But for BringIt members, arcade owners aren’t the only ones making money off Street Fighter IV challenges.  When you sign up for a free BringIt membership, you can block, kick, and karate chop for cash against gamers worldwide in head-to-head Street Fighter IV game battles or bracket-style multiplayer Street Fighter IV online tournaments.  And since Street Fighter 4 video games are contests of skill, not physical strength and superb mental stillness (thank God!), attention-deficit thirtysomethings can enjoy humbling their classically trained black-belt counterparts across the ocean without leaving the comfort of their couch…and then relish in reminding them to “please pay up in U.S. dollars.”

Online Street Fighter IV Tournaments: Features & Upgrades

As Capcom’s first numbered fighting game in almost a decade, you might think Street Fighter IV would have been totally reinvented.  Thankfully, common sense on the part of producers prevailed, and this classic ass-kicker stuck closely to the gameplay that spawned a sea of addicts in Street Fighter II.  However, Street Fighter IV video game tournaments do include some completely dope innovations, the most notable of which are as follows:

  • Killer 3D characters and environments—take the Street Fighter IV competition to a whole new level by combining the benefits of gameplay on traditional 2D planes with graphically spectacular multidimensional models; SF 4 graphics also get an enhancement with calligraphic strokes and ink smudges, which capture the game’s hand-drawn, Eastern influence
  • Focus Attacks—enable SF IV players to absorb an attack and initiate a counterattack in a rapid-fire two-step process, giving greater weight to the ability to read one’s opponent
  • Ultra Combos—a new class of Street Fighter IV special moves—are drawn-out, almost cinematic actions that include a succession of high-force fighting combinations
  • Downloadable content—provides access to even more Street Fighter IV features and accessories, such as replay (via the Championship Mode pack) and five additional costume packs
  • Even better brawlers—supporting the old saying, “Make new friends, but keep the old…”—include all 12 original assailants, plus four new foes, such as an aspiring Mexican chef, a fat Kung Fu fighter, and a sexed-up female spy
